Flight operations at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka remained suspended for nearly eight hours on Saturday due to dense fog.
A total of 12 to 14 flights could not depart the airport between 7:30am and 10:40am, sources said.
No inbound or outbound flights operated at the airport from 2:30am to 10:40am due to poor visibility caused by dense fog, said AKM Rezaul Karim, spokesperson of Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB).
Spell of dense fog has been sweeping across the country causing disruptions to air and water ways for several days.
The met office said that the current mild cold wave, sweeping over most regions of the country, is likely to continue throughout January while the moderate cold wave hitting certain regions might abate within two or three days. “The moderate cold wave, severity with minimum temperature of 6.1-8.0 degree celsius, is likely to abate by the next two or three days,” said Mizanur Rahman, a Meteorologist of Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). “But the mild cold wave situation, severity with minimum mercury level at 8.1-10.0 degree celsius, may continue throughout this month over a few regions of the country,” he said.
The overall temperature of the country increased by 4.5 degree celsius with the minimum temperature on Saturday reaching 7.0 degree celsius to northwestern Tentulia, Mizanur Rahman said.
On January 8, Tentutlia witnessed record low temperature of 2.6 degree celsius.
However, the met office in a weather forecast on Saturday said mild to moderate cold wave has been sweeping over Rangpur, Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions and the regions of Tangail, Faridpur, Madaripur, Gopalganj, Jessore, Kushtia, Satkhira, Chuadanga, Barisal, Sitakunda and Rangamati.
Moderate to thick fog may occur over the country from midnight to their morning and it may continue at places till noon while weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country.
