Detectives of Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) during a raid at a flat in port city’s Panchlaish area on Tuesday arrested four women and a man who blackmailed people for large sums of money.
The scammers-Fatema Begum, 28; Mamtaz Akhter alias Rista, 18; Sathi Akhter, 18; Hazera Begum, 34; and Rafiqul Islam, 34 – used to target and lure well-off men to the flat and secretly take indecent photographs and videos of the victims, said police at a press conference at the office of Detective Branch (DB).
SM Mostain Hossain, DB’s deputy commissioner (Bandar), said the arrestees are active members of a scammer gang that made money by blackmailing their victims.
A female member of the gang first initiated conversation with a male target over phone and developed close relations with him, the DC said, adding that she would soon invite him to meet her at the flat rented by the gang.
After the man entered the flat, she would get intimate with him and the other gang members would take photos and videos of them without the man’s consent to blackmail him for a large sum of money.
Mostain also said, “After being blackmailed by the group, one of their victims lodged a complaint with the DB office. Police [then] tracked down and arrested them from the flat in Rahman Manson.”
A case was filed with Panchlaish Police Station in this connection, the ADC added.
