Agitated local people on Saturday noon smashed a den of alleged imposter ‘ peer’ and beaten a follower of them at Hapania village under Mahilara union of Gournadi upazila in Barisal district.
Soikat Guha Piklu, local UP chairman, said Halim Akon, Islamic Studies teacher of Mahilara Degree College, Idris Kobiraj and Mainuddin, local influential, claiming themselves as followers of Gani Shah, a Pir of Comilla and his local representative Fakir Malek Talukdar of the village since 2005.
They buried dead body of Malek Talukdar at the house of Halim Akon in 2006 and creating dens of different unsocial activities and drug addiction they continued practices of their sect.
These activities agitated local people and they earlier also attacked the followers of Malek Shah, but failed to oust them from the area as the fakirs were connected influential corners, Piklu said.
Recently the local people again complained against the imposter fakirs to local administration accusing them for practicing and spreading unsocial activities and drug addiction in the area.
Masud Hasan Patowary, UNO Gournadi, said after receiving the complains he asked local UP chairman to investigate the matter and appear the fakirs before him.
On Saturday noon when the UP chairman with other people went to the house of the fakirs to serve the notice of the UNO, the accused fakirs fled from the spot.
Then agitated local people ransacked the houses of three alleged imposter fakirs and beat Tipu Akon, 26, follower of late fakir Malek Shah.
However Tipu was later rescued by UP chairman and police rushed to the spot controlled the situation, said Soikat Guha Piklu.
Sajjad Hossain, Gournadi police station officer in charge, said police patrol deployed in the area and till this report no case was lodged.
