Democratic growth impossible without freedom of media

Iqbal Sobhan Chowdhury, former advisor to the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday said growth of democracy is quite impossible without freedom of the press. ‘Journalists are being tortured for their professions by plots of administration, politicians and terrorists’, he added.
He was addressing as the chief guest at a meeting arranged by Jashore Journalists’ Union held at Jashore Press Club marking the 19th death anniversary of journalist Shamsur Rahman.
On July 16, 2000 Shamsur Rahman, a special correspondent of Dainik Janakantha and a stringer of BBC Bangla Service, was shot dead by unidentified assailants at his office at Daratana, the heart of the town. The incident took place at around 8:10pm on the day.
To mark the day, Jashore Press Club, Journalists Union of Jashore and Jashore Journalists Union chalked out elaborated programmes including placing wreaths at his grave, holding discussions and prayer sessions.
The discussions were addressed among other by Zahid Hasan Tukun, president, Jashore Press Club, Anwarul Kabir Nantu, vice president, Ahsan Kabir, general secretary, Tauhidur Rahman, Shahid Joy, Tauhid Zaman and Akramuzzaman.
