Information minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said democracy was confined on July 16, 2007 not Sheikh Hasina, Sheikh Hasina protested the different irregularities of then care taker govt for the better interest of the people and hence she was arrested.
Basically she was held following the movement for realising the legitimate rights of the people. So this black day of 16th July is being observed at Confine Day of Sheikh Hasina across the country.
He disclosed it while addressing the Sheikh Hasina Confine Day at a city community centre as chief guest yesterday as arranged by the Chattogram Mohanagar Awami League (AL) . Information Minister said the army backed caretaker govt detained Sheikh Hasina in that crucial period rather arresting KhaledaZia. LaterKhaleda Zia was arrested alongwith the midlevel leaders of BNP and AL. Acting President of city AL Mahtabuddin Chowdhury presided over the discussion meeting moderated by Publicity Secretary Safiqul Islam. City Mayor AJM Nasiruddin graced the occasion as special guest. Among others, vice president Nayeem Uddin Chowdhury, Altaf Hossain Bacchu, Ibrahim Hossain Babul, Adv Sunil Sarker, CDA chairman Jahirul AlamDobash, spoke on the occasion.
