Demand for Zinc paddy seed rises

A discussion meeting on seed value chain of zinc paddy was arranged at the Khamarbari, Directorate of Agriculture Extension (DAE), Jashore under CBC programme organised by HarvestPlus on Wednesday.
At the meeting different level of seed producers, dealers, retailers, and farmers attended to understand the demand and find out the possible sources to supply the demand. At the meeting 28 participants from Keshabpur, Manirampur and Narail Sadar Upazila assume over 100MT of seed demand for BRRI Dhan74 in the upcoming Boro season in these Upazilas. The dealers and retailer’s claim that the production of this rice variety was remarkable in the low land and due to not lodging, medium blast resistance, short duration, and higher yield, the zinc rice variety is being popular among the farmers.
The meeting was chaired by Syed Md Abu Hanifa, Coordinator, HarvestPlus. The Chief Guest of the meeting was Md Manjurul Haque, DD, Directorate of Agriculture Extension(DAE) and special guest wa Khurshid Alam, DD, Seed Marketing, BADC. The chief guest remarks on the promising zinc rice varieties and requested the concern parties to contribute to seed supply to manage the high rising demand of zinc rice. Special guest remarks on his special support for future seed multiplication by the seed producers. Divisional Coordinator of HarvestPlus Mr. Jahid Hussain has shown the importance of zinc in human body, zinc rice varieties and seed production trend by a power point presentation. The meeting was arranged by HarvestPlus implementing partner Bakerganj Forum.
