Construction work of superstructure of the Dhaka Elevated Expressway [DEE] will start on November 1. It is expected that, the total work of 19 kilometers long expressway under Public Private Partnership [PPP] would be completed by 2018.
Experts said the highly ambitious multi-billion taka DEE project will play a vital role to reduce traffic jam while it will take hardly 20 minutes to reach Kutubkhali from airport.
Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Thursday sat in a meeting with the Ital-Thai Development Company Limited, a Thailand-based organization, at Setu Bhaban in city.
“The construction work of main structure is going to be started on the first day of November. Construction of superstructure has already been completed in the
meantime. They [Italy-Thai Development Company] have brought construction equipment of the superstructure,” Obaidul Quader said after attending the meeting.
He said: “The project stretching 19 kilometers will be constructed in three phases. In the first phase, 7.45 kilometers will be constructed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport to Banani Railway Station. About 5.85 kilometers road will be constructed in the second phase stretching from Banani to Moghbazar.”
“Finally, the third phase construction work will be done in 6.43 kilometers way from Moghbazar to Kutubkhali at Dhaka Chittagong Highway,” the Minister said.
Of the total expressway, the airport to Kamalapur portion to be built beside the railway track. So, there will be no possibility of public sufferings or traffic jam in this area during construction work, official sources said.
The government signed the first deal to construct DEE on January 19, 2011 and foundation stone was laid on April 4 same year. In the first round, constructions of 328 pilings were finished.
But the project expenditure was increased due to frequent change in design of the DEE and the government signed the second contract with Ital-Thai Construction Company on December 15, 2013.
Although the timeframe was fixed two times, one on September 2014 and second on June 2015, to start the construction work of DEE, the actual work began on August 2015.
It would cost Tk 8,940-crore to complete the project as per estimation by the government. But there is widespread speculation that the total expenditure of project may increase further due to dilly-dally mood of constriction company.
Officials concerned said that passengers can board or disembark on different spots of the DEE. Expressing determination, Obaidul Quader further said: “President of Ital-Thai Development Company has assured me to finish the work within 2018.”
But concerned circle feat that the DEE could not be completed by the timeframe mentioned by the Minister. Earlier in February 10, Obaidul Quader said that the project may be completed in 2019.
