UNB, Dhaka :
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday demanded the government declare flashflood-hit haor areas as disaster ones, and provide the victims with relief materials until the new crops are harvested.
He came up with the demand at a press conference at BNP’s Nayapaltan central office.
Fakhrul alleged that though different haor areas in Netrokona, Kishoreganj, Sunamganj, Moulvibazar and Habiganj were affected by flash flood caused by excessive rain and onrush of water from upstream, the government did not take any effective step to tackle the natural disaster and assuage the sufferings of the victims.
He said, crops on around 3.5 lakh hectares of land in the flood-hit areas have so far been completely damaged, putting the farmers in serious predicament.
“Losing their lone crop of the year, the farmers in the haor areas are passing through an inhuman life. Lakhs of affected people are facing a humanitarian crisis in those areas, as the government assistance is insufficient. The current government is not standing beside the flood-hit people as it was not elected with their votes,” the BNP leader said.
Referring to his recent visit to different flood-affected areas in Netrokona
district, Fakhrul said the victims told him that they were going through inhuman situation amid the shortage of food as their crops were completely damaged. “The government is distributing inadequate relief materials as eyewash.”
