The government will not change its decision on reducing 10 marks from Multiple Choice Question (MCQ) method at both SSC and HSC examinations, Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said on Sunday.
“The decision regarding reducing marks on MCQ question will remain unchanged. There is no logic or reason to change the decision as we want to bring a qualitative change in question paper system through increasing 10 marks on creative question system,” he told journalists at a press briefing at the Secretariat in the city yesterday.
Nahid said the decision was taken after a meeting with the educationists.
Pro-Vice Chancellor of Dhaka University Professor Md Aktaruzzaman, Professor Zafar Iqbal of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Executive Director of Campaign for Popular Education (CAMPE) Rasheda K. Choudhury, a Professor of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) Mohammad Kaykobad, attended the meeting.
Earlier, 2 hours and 10 minutes were allotted to answer six creative questions, now students will get 2 hours and 30
minutes to answer seven creative questions. Students will get enough time to answer the seven questions, as no break will be given between essay type and MCQ sections from the next year, he added.
The Minister said previously the students would get 21 minutes and 40 seconds to answer each creative question, and now they will get 21 minutes and 26 seconds.
“This basic change will be brought and we will see it in a year,” said Zafar Iqbal.
Meanwhile, the students of schools and colleges across the country have started movements demanding an end to the new format.
The students said they would be under tremendous pressure, as they would have to answer seven creative questions within 2 hours 20 minutes.
Traditional question system had more focus on memorisation power of students, however, the creative question system gives high emphasis on brainstorming and creates scopes for students to think out of the box, educationists said.
The method of creative question is a very modern system in education, they said, adding many developed countries are following the system as it is a highly effective method for improving quality of education.
