Trawler capsize: Death toll reaches 10

The bodies of six women, who went missing following a trawler capsize in the Meghna River in Sonargaon upazila on Thursday, were recovered from the river on Friday, raising the death from the accident to 10.
The deceased were identified as Joybunnesa, 65, and her two daughters Ranu Akhter, 32, and
Shanta Akhter, 27; Rubina, 30, her mother Shafi Akhter, 46; and Banu Begum, 45, wife of Harun Bhandari. They hailed from Rampura of the capital.
A joint team of BIWTA, Fire Service and Coast Guard recovered the bodies from near the accident spot in the river from 1pm to 5pm, sub-inspector of Sonargaon Police Station Maksud told UNB.
Meanwhile, four people still remained missing, he said, adding that the rescue operation was on.
The engine-run trawler carrying a group of 30-40 people, who was going to traditional fair ‘Soleman Shah alias Langter Mela’ at Beltali of Matlab upazila in Chandpur from Rampura, sank in the river at Char Kishoreganj around 4pm on Thursday after being hit by strong waves.
Four people-Sattar Miah, 40, his daughter Lamia, 5, Zohra Begum, 70, and Kanchan, 65, of Rampura in the capital-died on the spot and 10 others had gone missing after the boat capsized.
On April 2, 2015, 16 people were killed as a trawler sank in the Buriganga River near Aliganj Ferryghat of Fatullah here while a group of people was returning from the same ‘Langter Mela’.
