Staff Reporter :
Every year Eid holidays are made a death trap by mad rush for homes and drivers’ reckless driving.
About 440 people were killed between July 3 and July 17 in different road, railway and river-route accidents across the country.
The nation can only hear the crying of the deceased families, but they don’t find any drastic measures from the concerned authorities to prevent the road accidents.
Of the victims, there were doctors, teachers, engineers, journalists, political party men, drivers, women and children.
Among the major causes for the road accidents, the report said that there were no road signs or road markings and road lamps in many parts of the national highways during night journey. The regional and feeder roads do not have turning marks as well.
Besides, faulty construction of the highways, vehicular defects, violation of traffic laws, rising number of motorbikes, easybikes and auto-rickshaws contribute to the accidents.
According to the statistics of Bangladesh Jatri Kolyan Samity, a total of 440 people were killed in road, river-route and railway accidents while 791 were injured from July 3 to 17 July.
The road and highway accidents alone have claimed the lives of 398 people and left 774 ones injured in 319 accidents while the river-route and railway accidents have killed 42 people.
Analysing the accident data collected from various news media, the non-government organisation said that both the number of death toll and road accidents had been increased to a whopping rate compared with the last seven years. Their information said the death toll has gone up by 31.41 percent while the road accidents increased by 24.76 percent.
Secretary General of Bangladesh Jatri Kolyan Samity Mozammel Haque Chowdhury disclosed the information at a press conference in the Dhaka Reporters Unity on Tuesday.
