Rajon, Rakib killings: Death references sent to HC

The death references of Samiul Alam Rajon and Rakib killing cases in which six people were sentenced to death have been sent to the High Court for its approval.
The relevant documents reached the ‘death reference’ section of the High Court around 12:30 pm on Tuesday, said HC additional registrar Sabbir Foyez.
He said, the relevant branch will prepare the paper books and place those before the court for hearing.
The High Court approval is a must for executing the death sentence of a convict. Besides, the defence will get the chance to appeal against the judicial court verdict within a specific time, he said.
On November 8, six people were sentenced to death in two sensational cases filed over the killings of teenage boy Samiul Alam Rajon in Sylhet and 12-year-old boy Rakib in Khulna after inhuman torture.
The courts delivered the verdicts after four months of the killing of Rajon while three months and five days after the killing of Rakib.
A Sylhet court sentenced four people to death, one to life term imprisonment, three others to seven years’ jail and two others to one-year imprisonment each in the case filed for torturing Rajon to death over a ‘theft’ at Sundar Ali Market in Kumargaon area of the city on July 8.
The condemned convicts are Kamrul Islam, 24, son of late Abdul Malek of Sheikhpara village in Sadar upazila, Moyna Miah alias Bara Moyna, 45, Tajuddin Aham alias Badal, 28, and Zakir Hossain Pavel (fugitive). The lifer is Nur Ahmed alias Nur Miah.
Besides, Kamrul’s two brothers-Muhit Alam and Ali Haidar alias Ali and Shamim Ahmed (fugitive) were awarded seven years’ imprisonment while Ayez Ali and Dulal one year.
The court also acquitted three accused-Firoz Miah, Asmot Ali alias Asmot Ullah and Ruhul Amin alias Ruhel-as allegations brought against them were not proved.
On July 8, 13-year-old boy Sheikh Samiul Alam Rajon, son of Sheikh Azizur Rahman of Badeali village in Sadar upazila, was brutally tortured to death over a theft at Sundar Ali Market in Kumargaon area of the city.
The killers themselves took the video footage of the incident. The video clip went viral on social networking site Facebook and video-sharing site Youtube which triggered a widespread outcry.
Meanwhile, acting Judge of Khulna Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court Dilruba Sultana sentenced two people to death in the case over the killing of 12-year-old boy Rakib, acquitting another accused, Beauty Begum. The condemned convicts are M Omar Sharif and Mintu Khan.
