The family of Rummon Sheikh alias Sumon Sheikh, who died in the custody of Hatirjheel police station in the capital on Saturday, has complained that police want to give them the body on some conditions.
Family of the victim said that the police have given condition to receive his brother’s body. So, they are yet to receive the body.
Family members said that the police station has marked the incident as an accidental death. As the matter was suspicious, they wanted to file a case with a Dhaka court. But the court is yet to accept their case.
According to family, police wanted to hand over Sumon’s body on some conditions. “Police said they have to take the body directly from the hospital morgue to hometown by an ambulance. Otherwise, it they will not handover the body. Even, we will not be able to take the dead body to the Rampura house.”
They added, “We did not get cooperation by going to court; the police are not helping either. We will not take Sumon’s body until filing a murder case against the police men who remained on duty during the incident.”
Sumon’s family said that they will receive the body only if the autopsy is done properly. They want justice for this murder.
“Filing of a murder case with a Dhaka court is underway. We hope we will be able to file the case on Monday. Then, we will receive the body and bury him in Sumon’s hometown,” Sujan Sheikh, brother-in-law of the deceased, told the media.
Sujan said they would file the case against some police personnel and a staff of the private company where Sumon worked.
“It is obvious that police were negligent. How can a man in police custody die by suicide?” he added.
Sumon’s wife Jannat Akhter said that police may arrest my husband for whatever reason, the police will provide security. However, he died inside the police station in their presence. The police must take responsibility for this.
Hatirjheel Police Station Inspector (Investigation) Mejbah Uddin was asked about this but he said that he could not say anything. He said that if the legitimate claimants go, the police should hand over the body.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) HM Azimul Haque said in this regard, the body will be handed over to the family after the autopsy. There is no further legal process left.
