BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday alleged that the government is speaking about holding Dhaka City Corporation elections only to confuse people about the opposition’s ongoing movement.
“This illegal government is making such evil designs to get legitimised and suppress the opposition’s movement. They’re now talking about DCC polls after a long time only to divert people’s attention to
a different direction,” he said. Fakhrul, the BNP acting secretary general, came up with the remarks while talking to reporters after visiting ailing film director Chashi Nazrul Islam at LabAid Hospital in the city.
The BNP leader said the government had resorted to such evil plans in the past but it could not stop their movement. “Their plots will not be successful this time either.”
Earlier, on Monday, at the weekly cabinet meeting, Prime minister Sheikh Hasina, reportedly asked the authorities concerned to submit a specific plan for Dhaka City Corporations (DCCs) elections instead of extending the tenure of the current administrators.
She told the ministers concerned to think about holding DCC elections within this winter.
Asked whether BNP will join the polls if those are really held, Fakhrul said the party forum will decide it.
About the placing of chargesheets in a sedition case against BNP vice chairman Sadeque Hossain Khoka, he said the government having failed to face the opposition politically is harassing its leaders and activists implicating them in false cases. “They’re so much afraid of our movement that they have submitted the chargesheets against Khoka who has long been undergoing treatment abroad.”
He further said, “It has exposed how much Awami League has got politically bankrupt.”
