Cyclone damages 140 kilometer roads in Bagerhat

As many as 140 kilometer roads of Bagerhat district were damaged by the recent cyclone Amphan and tidal surge of the sea water accompanied with incessant rain water. The damaged roads included concrete (metaled), brick built, semi-brick built and kuncha roads. As a result, both pedestrians and vehicles have been suffering a lot of inconveniences to use those roads. Concerned authorities will start the repairing works of the damaged roads very soon, it is learnt for the concerned authorities.
It s learnt from G M Mujibor Rahman, Executive Engineer of LGED (Local Government and Engineering Department) of Bagerhat that due to the cyclone Amphan and tidal surge of the sea water accompanied with continuous and heavy downpour of rains 99.66 kilometer roads of the department were damaged in the different Upazilas of the district. Out of them 51.22 kilometers were damaged by Amphan and the rest 41.54 kilometer roads were damaged by the tidal surge accompanied with rain water. Consequently, the department incurred loss of money amounting Tk.70 crores 97 lakh. It was already mentioned earlier that damaged roads included metal- led, brick built, semi-brick built and Kuncha roads.
On the other hand, some 20.45 kilometer roads under the Roads and Highways Department of the district were damaged by the recent cyclone Amphan and tidal surge of the river water accompanied with rain water. Md. Farid Uddin, Executive Engineer of the Roads and Highways Department, Bagerhat disclosed, in order to repair the damaged roads proposals after estimating the approximate costs were sent to the higher authorities for approval. According to the project (estimated plans), the damaged roads will be repaired into two phases-one is short term and the other is long term. Estimated cost of short term repairing works is Tk.87 lakh while the estimated cost for long term repairing woks is Tk.35 crore 70 lakh. He added, very important and busy roads those were badly damaged we already made them fit for the easy movement of the vehicles from the local initiative.
Besides the roads under Roads & Highways Department and LGED, some 27 kilometer roads were also damaged in Bagerhat, Mongla Port and Morrelganj Pourashavas by the cyclone Amphan and tidal surge of seawater accompanied with rain water.
Out of them 4 kilometer roads are within Bagerhat Pourashava, 3 kilometer roads within Mongla Port Popurashava and 20 kilometer roads within Morrelganj Pourashava. By this time authorities of Bagerhat Pourashava and Mongla Port Pourashava already started the repairing work of the damaged roads. The length of damaged roads within Morrelganj Pourashava is much more than those of other Pourashavas. The authorities are yet to start the repairing works. Adv. Monirul Islam, Mayor of Morrelganj Pourashav told the newsmen, the repairing works of the damaged roads within the Pourashava will be started very soon. The mayor added, his pourashava is situated on the bank of the mighty river Panguchi. So, at the time cyclone and flood tide of the river water it (Pourashava) is badly damaged.
Rural people complained, most of the damaged roads of LGED are situated in the rural areas of the district. As the repairing works of those rural roads is yet to be started the rural people and the small vehicles are suffering a lot of inconveniences to move on those roads. Consequently, road mishaps are happened there very often. One Akbor Hossain of village Chandrapara under Kachua Upazila in the district told this correspondent, the road that connects Fatepur village under Bagerhat Sadar Upazila to Fultala village under Kachua Upazila crossing through a good number of villages is still unfit for the use for both the pedestrians and small vehicles. Due to the cyclone Amphan huge a number of road side trees were uprooted and fell on this road. Though the trees were removed and a few months already passed after the Amphan the damaged road was yet to be repaired.
