Super cyclone Amphan caused deaths to about five persons across the country. Of them, two were from southern island district Bhola, two from Patuakhali and one from Chattogram.
In Bhola, An elderly man died after a tree fell on him amid the stormy weather caused by the cyclonic storm Amphan.
The victim, Siddique Fakir, 70, was injured in the tree-fall on Wednesday morning in Kachchapia area of Char Fashion and succumbed to his injury later while undergoing treatment in a local hospital. Meanwhile, the water level of Meghna and Tetulia Rivers has risen six to seven foot high than usual and Meghna has remained turmoil amid gusty wind sweeping over the district due to the cyclonic storm.
Hasan Mahmud, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board said, the tidal water of Meghna rose around five foot, also assuring that embankment has remained risk-free and the authority has remained prepared to face any emergency.
District Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Masud said around three lakh residents of various remote and Char areas were taken to 1,104 shelter centres in the district. The CPP volunteers alongside the Coast Guard and police worked to rescue the remaining who failed to move in shelter centres.
The district and upazila administrations have provided them with food in the shelter centres.
Besides, a trawler carrying 30 passengers from Majhu Chowdhury Ghat in Laxmipur crossed the Meghna and came to Bhola in Rajapur area near the shore and sank due to the waves. A man named Rafiqul Islam died in the incident. His body was later recovered. His house was said to be in Moniram area of Borhanuddin upazila. The matter has been confirmed by the OC of Borhanuddin police station.
In Patuakhali, a 5-year-old kid named Rashed died as a tree fell on him while going to the cyclone shelter centre with his parents.
The incident took place on Wednesday evening in the Panpatti area of the district’s Galachipa upazila.
Locals said, the kid was going to the cyclone shelter at Tulatoli Government School near his home. He died on the spot. But both of his parents are safe.
Galachipa Upazila Nirbahi Office Shah Md Rafiqul Islam confirmed the matter to The Business Standard.
The body of a local Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) leader recovered nine hours after he went missing following the capsizing of a boat in a canal in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali this morning.
Shah Alam (40) was the leader of CPP No. 6 unit of Dhankhali union under Kalapara upazila, our Patuakhali correspondent reports.
A boat carrying four CPP volunteers, including Shah Alam, sank in the Hafez Pedar canal around 8:30am after being hit by the storm, he said.
Three volunteers managed to reach the shore, but Alam was missing, said Asaduzzaman.
The incident took place while they were asking people — using a loudspeaker — to go to cyclone shelters, said the official.
On information, a team of divers from a local fire service station rushed to the spot and started a rescue operation, he added.
The divers recovered the body around 6:00pm this evening, said Asaduzzaman, Assistant Director of Kalapara CPP.Chittagong Island Sandwip in the Bay of Bengal Super Cyclone Amphan drowned in the tidal waters. A young man named Salauddin (18) died.
Locals recovered his body from the river bank in Ward 2 of Sandwip Municipality around 12 noon on Wednesday (May 20). Salauddin is the son of Abul Kashem of Honaji’s house in Ward No. 2 of Sandwip Municipality.
It is learned that Salauddin went to the new by char to cut grass for cattle. The effects of the cyclone Amphan increased the tidal waters and currents and at one stage swept away Salauddin. Locals later recovered his body.
