Cyber tribunal rejects Barrister Fakhrul’s bail pleas

A tribunal here on Sunday rejected the bail petition of Barrister AKM Fakhrul Islam, a lawyer of war crimes
convict Salauddin Quader Chowdhury, arrested in connection with the leakage of the draft verdict.
Cyber Tribunal (Bangladesh) Judge KM Shamsul Alam also fixed January 11 next to submit a report on compliance of its order to publish advertisement in newspapers against Fakrul’s associate Advocate Mehedi Hasan.
On November 20 last
year, plain-clothes police arrested Barrister Fakhrul Islam in a case filed in connection with the leakage of the draft verdict on BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury.
Detective Branch of police Inspector Fazlur Rahman filed the case with Shahbagh Police Station on October 4.
On October 1, 2013, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Salauddin Quader Chowdhury to death for committing crimes against humanity, including genocide, during the 1971 Liberation War.
However, the ICT verdict without containing the judges’ observations and sentences got circulated on different websites before it was pronounced by the tribunal.
On August 28 this year, police pressed charges against seven people, including the Salauddin’s wife Farat Quader Chowdhury, son Humman Quader Chowdhury and Fakhul, in the case.
The other accused are Fakhrul’s associate Adv Mehedi Hasan, Salauddin’ s manager Mahbubul Afsan, two staff of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 — Nayan Ali and Faruq Hossain. Of the accused, Mahbubul, Nayan and Faruq are behind the bars while SQ Chowdhury’s son and wife are on bail and Mehedi Hasan is on the run.
