CWASA targets to reduce system loss

Chattogram Bureau :
C WASA’s system loss was at one time up to 40 percent. Now it has come down to 21 percent. Although it could not be brought to zero gradually , the WASA authorities said that work is underway to bring system loss down to maximum extents.
WASA is losing a lot of revenue every year due to system loss. Non-Revenue Water (NRW) is the name given to the waste of water produced before it reaches consumers, even after pipe leakage, theft or illegal use. At one time 15 to 200 million liters of water was produced but non-revenue water was about 40 percent.
Currently water production has increased. At present, 140 million liters are being produced daily from Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant 1st Project and 90 million liters daily from Madunaghat Water Treatment Plant. The 2nd project of Sheikh Hasina Water Treatment Plant is producing 40 million liters of water per day.
While contacted Engr.AKM Fazlullah, Managing Director, Chattogram WASA, said that the rate of revenue water is decreasing with the increase in production. “When I took charge of CWASA, the system loss was 40 per cent,” he said. Now it has come down to 20-21 percent. We are trying to bring our target system loss to zero percent . .
Now more water is being produced. Water is being wasted due to damaged or old pipelines. These are old pipelines in almost all areas. Leakage is increasing where giving water pressure. Even in the developed world, the system loss cannot bring down less than 10 per cent. We hope to bring it down to 15 per cent by next year.
