CWASA hikes water prices from this month

Chittagong Water Supply and Sewerage authority hiked water price by 16.5% percent for domestic and commercial connections in the port city from very beginning of the new year. From now the price of residential connections fixed Tk.9 per unit and Tk.25 for commercial consumers. The previous price per unit was Tk.7.61 and Tk.21.56 respectively.
CWASA Managing Director AKM Fazlullah told media on Wednesday that the new prices will be effected from Jan 1.CWASA sent a letter to the local government ministry last year, seeking permission to hike the price. Fazlullah said the ministry later fixed the new prices Chittagong WASA has 63,545 connections, including 88 percent for households.The prices were last raised on Jan 1, 2016, by 5 percent to Tk 7.61 per unit for residential connections and Tk 21.56 for commercial and industrial users.
On Dec 7, the Chittagong WASA sent the proposal to the ministry to hike the price by 40 percent on average for household connections to Tk 10 per unit and industrial ones to Tk 32 per unit.The Consumers Association of Bangladesh (CAB) President SM Nazer Hossain had told that CWASA did not hold a public hearing before making the proposal. He had disagreed with the CWASA claim over the cost to produce water. CWASA always speak about systems loss, If they can stop this, there will be no need to hike the price, CAB President said.
