Curfew in Rangamati lifted, 144 still in force

Deputy commissioner and district magistrate of Rangamati M Samsul Arefin on Tuesday asked the law enforcers to hunt down those are making trouble defying the Section 144.
The directive was given at a special meeting held at the conference room of the DC office in the morning after withdrawing the nighttime curfew clamped for two days in the district town.
Meanwhile, the meeting also decided to ban the selling of some materials, including marbles and sharp weapons, in the town as a precautionary measure to avoid further trouble.
The meeting decided to form a coordination committee at each mahalla for
avoiding unacceptable situation. After the meeting, a peace rally was brought out in the town in order to keep harmony between the Bangalee settlers and the indigenous people.
Meanwhile, the Section 144, which was clamped in the district town for an indefinite period on Saturday, was relaxed till 5 pm on Tuesday following the peace rally in the town. Later, it came into effective again at 5pm.
Local MP Ushaton Talukdar, Firoza Begum Chinu, former State Minister Dipankar Talukdar, Rangamati region commander of Bangladesh Army Brig General Redwan Ahmed, BGB sector commander Mohammad Shawkat Osman and acting superintendent of Rangamati police Abul Kalam Azad were, among others, present in the meeting.
Earlier on Saturday, the local administration imposed Section 144 in the district town for an indefinite period prohibiting mass gathering following a clash between Pahari Chhatra Parishad (PCP) and ruling party activists at Hapiar Mor in the district town.
On Sunday, local administration has imposed a curfew in the district town until 8am on Monday following a clash between Bengalee settlers and indigenous people defying the Section 144.
Later, the curfew was extended from 5pm Monday to 8am on Tuesday.
