Bangladesh Road Transport Authority [BRTA], the sole regulatory body of country’s transport sector, has planned to impose restriction on plying of private cars with a view to reducing nagging traffic jam in the city, officials said.
At the same time, the BRTA will coordinate movement of public transport in different city routes for the same reason. It will also
apply some other techniques in the big cities and highways in a bid to get rid of increasing accidents as well as gridlock.
They said, a massive crackdown has already been launched against the unfit vehicles and fake driving license holders.
Meanwhile, the BRTA has submitted a draft proposal to the Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges with elaborating some programmes, including imposing restriction on plying of private cars in the capital.
As a part of the plan, it will fix the number of private cars and jeeps for each individual family. It also suggested not to give bank loan to buyers for discouraging them from buying private cars.
Besides, the BRTA has proposed to increase the number of AC buses in different city routes. It also planned to introduce huge number of big transports, such as articulated and double-decker buses, with reducing small vehicles. These big transports will also be given to the private operators for plying in different city routes under their own management.
“One of the main reasons behind the city traffic jam is private cars. But it will not be possible to stop plying of private cars without ensuring comfortable public transport for the solvent persons. So, we have proposed the concerned ministry to impose restriction on carrying school and college students by private cars to their educational institutions,” Md Nazrul Islam, Chairman of BRTA, said.
Mentioning that school-college students carrying private cars create massive traffic jam in the city, the BTRA Chairman said, “In our draft proposal, we have also proposed the ministry to introduce adequate number of AC buses in public and private sectors to carry students. It is
a matter of great concern that car ownership increasing rapidly which is one of the major issues of traffic congestion in Dhaka city”
The officials said, several areas of the city, including Dhanmondi, Bailey Road, Moghbazar, Mirpur, Banani and Gulshan become jam-packed everyday due to innumerable number of private cars parked in front of different educational institutions.
