Another case was filed on Tuesday over Cumilla communal violence triggered by alleged desecration of the Holy Quran at a Hindu temple.
The case was filed by Puja Rani, wife of Dilip Das (62) who died from injuries he suffered when troublemakers attacked Rajeshwari Kali Mandir in Manoharpur of the district on October 13.
Inspector Komol Krishna Dhor of Kotwali Police Station, where the case was filed, told UNB that 50-60 unidentified people were named in the case.
Meanwhile, Superintendent of Police(Cumilla) Khan Muhammad Rezwan said that the Criminal Investigation Department is keeping watch over several more people in another case filed over triggering communal violence by hurting religious sentiments.
“Soon, we will arrest several others over the incident,” he added.
Meanwhile, Cumilla police continued to quiz Iqbal Hossain, who reportedly placed the Holy Quran at a Puja mandap at Nauar Digir Par of Cumilla.
The SP said that though Iqbal confessed to his role in placing the Quran, he was yet to disclose the names of the masterminds.
He said three others, arrested in connection with the violence, are also being interrogated.
Earlier, the case filed over the Quran desecration in a puja mandap of Cumilla was handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
Police arrested Iqbal from Cox’s Bazar district on Thursday night after identifying him by scanning the footage of closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras.
Three others were arrested from different parts of the country over the matter.
They are Faisal and Hafez Humayun, the two khadems of Darogabari shrine, and Ekram. A local court on Saturday put them on a seven-day remand in the case.
Meanwhile, a case has been filed against 50-60 unnamed persons following the death of a victim of communal violence in Cumilla.
The victim-Dilip Das, 62, — was hit on the head by a pelted stone during the attack at Rajeshwari temple in Monohorpur on 13 October.
Dilip Das, hailing from the Gangchar area, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday night while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.
His wife Puja Rani filed a case with Kotwali Police Station, Inspector Kamal Krishna Dhar confirmed the news to the media on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the number of arrestees in the case filed over hurting religious sentiment in Cumilla may rise, said the district’s Superintendent of Police Khan Muhammad Rezwan Khan.
A total of four people including Iqbal Hossain who put the Holy Quran at Nanuar Dighi Puja mandap on 13 October were arrested in the case.
The police official said the four arrestees are being interrogated face-to-face, among them, Iqbal confessed his part in the offence. However, he did not disclose anything about who instigated him in the act.
The video footage is being scrutinised and more might be arrested if identified in the investigation, said Khan Muhammad.
Fresh remand may also be sought for Iqbal following the end of the current one, he added.
Earlier, two new cases have been filed with Kotwali Model Police Station in connection with the mayhem of October 13 in Cumilla.
Criminal Investigation Department’s Special Superintendent of Police of Cumilla Khan Mohammad Rezwan confirmed the news to the media.
“A murder case has been filed against unknown people involved in the attack of Rajeshawri Kalibari on October 13 where one Dilip Das got hurt on his forehead and later died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital’s ICU after fighting for his life for 9 days,” the SP said.
The victim’s wife Rupa Das filed the murder case with Kotwali Model Police Station.
Tarun Kanti Muduk Mithun filed another case with the same police facility against unidentified people for carrying attacks and vandalising Puja mandaps at Nanurar Dighirpar in Cumilla.
Meanwhile, BNP has held a press briefing against Ekattor TV and different print and electronic media for publishing news against Cumilla City Corporation Mayor Monirul Haque Sakku and Jubo Dal city unit General Secretary Yusuf Molla Tipu with the Cumilla incident.
