Cultivation of high yielding variety mango Amrupali gaining popularity in Narsingdi district due to higher economic prospect.
Amrapali mango has become popular in the district since 2000. Many people have been cultivating Amrapqali mango in their garden and also the in front of the houses.
During the last ten sapling plantation season about 20000 saplings of Amrapali were planted in the six upazilas of the district.
The growers have collected the saplings directly from the Agriculture Department and from private nurseries.
Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Narsingdi Sobash Chandra Gayan told The New Nation that saplings of this kind of mango need a little spaceto grow up. Two Amrapali saplings need. maximum 10 to 12 feet space for growing fast.
The Amrapoli tree start bearing fruits after three or four years. He said these variety mango are more delicious and tasty with excellent flavor then some other varieties of mongo. Amrapoli gbnerally is grown high fallow land where scope of other crop cultivation is limited. Some 200 saplings can be planted on per bigha of land which produces an average of 150 to 200 mounds of mango pre year.
Monir Hossain of village Joynagar under Shibpur upazila in Narsingdi district has tremendous success in cultivation the Amrapoli mango. He planted 400 sapling of Amrapoli variety mango on his 60 decimal of land five years ago.
This year an excellent production of Amrapoli mango may be achieved in his garden. He hopes that he will get 200 to 300 mounds of mango from his orchard this year.
Amrapoli growers of the district are hopeful over the production. Harvesting of the crop begin from the 1st week of bangli months of Asar.
According to local fruit market sources, Amrapoli variety of ripe mangoes has extreme demand because of its excellent color sweet flavors.
Each kilo gram at will be sold at Taka 70 to 80 which contains only four to five.
Experts opined that the could earn huge foreign exchange every year by country exporting Amrapoli.
