Chittagong University has temporarily suspended Assistant Proctor Anwar Hossain Chowdhury, who is currently detained over his suspected roles in the 2016 murder of Bangladesh Chhatra League leader Diaz Irfan Chowdhury. The university administration made the decision on Sunday, according to the organisation’s employee statute.
“Anwar Hossain has been suspended at the instructions of the vice chancellor under Section 15 (a) of the Employee (Skills and Discipline) Statute,” the university’s acting Registrar KM Noor Ahmed told bdnews24.com.
According to the decision, Sociology Department Prof Anwar Hossain is temporarily suspended from Dec 18 until further notice. He will, however, receive his living allowance.
Hossain, out on interim bail, appeared before the court on Dec 18 to request permanent bail. The court dismissed Hossain’s petition and sent him to jail.
Diaz, who served as a vice-chairman of the CU BCL, was found dead at his home on the campus on Nov 20, 2016. The body was found hanging from the ceiling of his bedroom.
Diaz’s parents are CU staffers.
The initial autopsy report said it was a suicide, but Diaz’s loyalists claimed rivals had murdered him and hung the body to cover it up
On Nov 24, 2017, Diaz’s family rejected the autopsy report and started a case with a Chittagong court accusing 10 people of the murder.
The case filed by Diaz’s mother Jaheda Amin Chowdhury with a senior judicial magistrate’s court accused 10 people, including Anwar Hossain and Alamgir Tipu.
The others she has accused of killing her son are Jamshedul Alam Chowdhury, Rashedul Alam Jishan, Abu Torab Porosh, Monsur Alam, Abdul Malek, Mizanur Rahman, Ariful Hoque Opu and Mohammad Arman.
