Around 300 students of Chittagong University formed a human chain and chanted slogans on the university central Shaheed Minar premises on Thursday noon, demanding immediate, permanent solution to the students’ transportation problems.
They came up with a nine-point demand including ensuring security in the university’s shuttle trains; increasing the number of trains’ compartments; banning outsiders from riding the trains and improving the train service.
Rabiul Islam, a participant in the human chain and a student of international relations department, said, “The number of students increased over the years, but the transport facility did not. Consequently, students are undergoing huge sufferings,” adding, “The university has 22 luxurious buses for the teachers and staff, but students are always being neglected.”
“We are suffering due to the increased fares and poor quality service of the campus-bound public transports,” said Rubana Hasan, a student of chemistry, adding that riding the public vehicles was time consuming for them.
The other demands include introduction of bus service from No. 1 gate or Zero Point area to CU Central Students’ Union (Cucsu) area; removal of restriction on Tori (human hauler) to enter the campus; fixing auto-rickshaw and rickshaw fares on the campus; and returning to the previous schedule for the shuttle trains.
When contacted, CU Proctor Ali Asgar Chowdhry said, “We are trying our best to improve the transport facilities,” adding, “We have already launched a bus service for the female students from CU campus to the city.”
“We have planned to introduce a bus service from No.1 gate to Cucsu, and will talk to the human-haulers’ owners in this regard,” he said.
About increasing the trains’ compartments, he said they would request the railway authorities to take measures to increase the number of compartments.
The university is located in Hathazari Upazila, some 22 kilometres away from the city. Some 24 thousand students frequent the campus every day from the city, except around eight thousand students who live on the campus.
