3-tier security measures ahead of Eid in Port City: Ctg shopping malls crowded with shoppers

The main religious festival of the Muslims Eid-ul -Fitr will be celebrated in this week most probably on Monday or Tuesday next . Ahead of Eid, city dwellers as well as the upazila residents are now busy to procure new clothes for their kids and necessary essential commodities to celebrate Eid .
 People from all walks of life are rushing towards shopping centres in the port city to buy clothes and other stuff as Eid-ul-Fitr is approaching fast.
Shop owners told that sale was showing an upward trend over the last couple of days as people especially, private and public service holders, have already received their salaries and Eid bonuses. Appreciating the government steps for creating favourable trade atmosphere during Ramadan, businessmen, market association leaders and shoppers said they are doing good business in a safe and secured environment.
Deployment of law enforcers at different strategic points and market places has created a foolproof security arrangement for businessmen as well as shoppers, said traders at different shopping malls. “We are doing good business this year as people seem to be relieved from sense of insecurity. Even as a businessman, I have not faced any untoward situation during the holy month of Ramadan, said Abul Kashem, President of Metropolitan Shop Owners’ Association. He said people with their family members are now coming for shopping even at midnight as the law and order situation has improved remarkably.
Shop owners said local products particularly three-pieces for girls, shoes, sarees with embroidery and stone work, panjabis, shirts and trousers produced by different local fashion houses are the main centre of attraction to the customers.
According to importers and wholesalers, sarees and cosmetics from India are still dominating the country’s Eid market while shoes, trousers, toys, readymade garments and electronic items from China, Taiwan and Thailand have occupied a good place in the market.
Sources at traffic department of Chittagong Metropolitan Police said the port city has been witnessing heavy traffic congestion from mid Ramadan particularly after office hour till iftar at New Market, Reazuddin Bazar, Jubilee Road, Station road, Andarkilla, Chawkbazar, GEC Crossing, Sholoshahar, Nasirabad, Agradab, Dewanhat Bahaddarhat due to heavy rush of buyers.
While talking to media most of the shop owners in Shopping Complex, New Market, Amin Centre, Mimi Super Market, Reazuddin Bazar, Central Plaza, Oscan City Shopping Complex, Moti Tower, Lucky Plaza, Singapore Market and Zahur Hawkers Market in the city said they were happy so far with the sale of their products.
“We really feel comfort and enjoy the pleasure to be part of Eid shopping spree as miscreants seem to be driven out of the city”, Shamsun Nahar, a shopper at New Market said.
BSS from Chittagong adds: A three-tier security measures has been taken in the Port city and its adjacent areas centering the Eid-ul-Fitr.
Besides, Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) has also set up nearly 120 Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras at different strategic points to monitor the security measures arranged for the city dwellers.
According to sources in CMP and district Police, the additional security measures will be affected from the day before the Eid and will continue for the next three days.
Anwar Hossain, Additional Commissioner of CMP, told the newsmen that all the police stations and camps have been given instruction to ensure extra security measures at all the celebration points including the Eid congregations.
Besides deployment of additional forces, detective vigilance has been intensified at all the market points and shopping malls.
Chittagong district police has also taken additional security measures in all 15 upazila headquarters from the previous day of Eid and that will continue for the following three days.
All the entry points of the city like Shah Amanat Bridge, City Gate and Oxygen area have been brought under tight security measures with CCTV monitoring.
Necessary instruction has also been given to search the suspicious persons at any points during the celebration period.
