Chattogram port has set a record in container handling and goods transport in January 2022.
A record number of 292,000 containers were handled at the country’s premier seaport, in the first month of the new year.
Chattogram Port Secretary Omar Farooq confirmed the matter on Sunday and said that a record number of two lakh 92 thousand single containers were unloaded at the port in January this year alone, reports BSS.
He said that Chattogram port is always active to keep the container handling activities. The port authorities are always vigilant so that the containers do not get entangled.
According to the data, an average of 2 lakh 68 thousand TEUS containers have been handled in Chattogram Port every month in January 21. The container handling was 2 lakh 80 thousand units in January 2021.
Among the handled containers, imported goods were about 1.66 million TEUs and the remaining 1.44 million TEUs were export products
 Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, Chittagong Port handed over 3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containers during fiscal year 2020-21 (FY21), setting a new record.
According to the Chittagong Port Authority (CPA) data, some 3,097,236 TEUs of containers were handled through the country’s prime seaport during the FY21, up from 2,797,190 TEUs in the fiscal 2019-20. Among the handled containers, imported goods were about 1.66 million TEUs and the remaining 1.44 million TEUs were export products.
Besides, cargo handling has been around 113.7 million tons in the outgoing fiscal.
Besides, 4,062 ships have come to and gone from the Chittagong port in FY21. In addition, larger ships are now able to dock at the port jetty and the port authorities consider it one of the successes.
Chittagong is handling around 85 – 90 % of the nation’s external trade.
