Chattogram Bureau :
Chattogram City Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury attended a discussion meeting with Rear Admiral M Shahjahan, Chairman, Chattogram Port Authority, at Bandar Bhaban on Sunday. He hoped that the port authorities would play a helpful and effective role in the development of Chittogram in the greater interest of the country.
When the construction of the tunnel under the Karnafuli river is completed, cities and industrial areas will be developed on the south bank. One will be City to Town. As a result, the importance of Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) and Chattogram Port will more than double. Therefore, the coordination between the two institutions and the scope of bilateral interests must be increased.
The development and modernization of Chattogram port as well as the compatibility of the development of the city is very important. If Chittagong city is not developed, the port will not be important.
The matter has to be considered and Chittagong Port has to give backup to Chittagong City Corporation. He said Chattogram port is the oldest natural port in the world. Merchants and traders have come to this port from far away.
Therefore, the port of Chittagong as a whole is the gateway to regional and global connectivity as the gateway to Southeast Asia. The port of Chattogram is the foundation of prosperity in the national economy. Development and modernization of Chittagram port is a supporting force for achieving national growth. Chattogram City Corporation is a service-oriented local government organization. Own income-generating projects and taxes paid by city dwellers are the only sources of income for this organization. There is considerable inadequacy in the financial capacity required to manage the overall development activities and expand the scope of services in the city. City Corporation main source of income is financial support from the port’s Authority.
Now the source of income collection has been closed for a long time. As a result, there has been a huge deficit in City financial capacity. Port Chairman Rear Admiral M Shahjahan said the overall development of Chittagong is not possible for City Corporation alone.
There is a connection with this city to change the destiny of the nation. So we need to coordinate with each other to enlighten the city and give positive backup to the whole country.
Chief Executive Officer of City Corporation Kazi Muhammad Mozammel Haque, Chief Revenue Officer Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Private Secretary to the Mayor Muhammad Abul Hashem, Estate Officer Md. Jasim Uddin, Chittagong Port Authority member (Administration and Planning) Zafar Alam, Member (Engineering) Commodore M Niyamul Hasan, Deputy Conservator Captain Faridul Alam, Secretary. Omar Farooq, Chief Engineer Mahmudul Hossain Khan, Deputy Manager (Land) Zillur Rahman and others port sources said.
