Chittagong Mass Killing Day was observed on Tuesday in the city with a call for expediting trials of the persons responsible for the gruesome killing on this day in 1988 during autocratic govt regime of HM Ershad.
Different political parties, socio-cultural organizations observed the day through various programmes including placing wreaths on the premises of Chittagong Court Hill Monument, discussion, hoisting black flags and wearing black badges.
The day is observed in commemoration of 24 innocent people who were killed in indiscriminate police firing on a huge procession, led by the then leader of the 15-party Alliance and incumbent Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, near Laldighi Maidan and Chittagong Court Building premises.
At least 200 people were injured in the incident. Sheikh Hasina who along with central party leaders had been on broad an exclusively decorated Laldighi bound truck-cum podium escaped narrowly as committed and dedicated party leaders and workers forged a human shield surrounding the truck bothering least to their life to save their beloved leader Hasina.
Chittagong City Awami League organised a discussion in front of Chittagong Court Hill Monument premises to mark the day.
Former city mayor and president of Chittagong city Awami League (AL) Alhaj ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury presided over the discussion while former lawmaker Ishak Mia, general secretary of Chittagong City AL and City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin, AL leaders Muslem Uddin Ahmed, Khurshed Alam Sujon, Noyeem Uddin Ahmed, Advocate Ibrahi Hossain Babul, Jahirul Alam Dobash and Advocate Iftekher Saimul Chowdhury, among others, addressed it.
Mohiuddin Chowdhury said, “It is a matter of regret that the trial of the Chittagong Mass Killing has been running for 29 years but the verdict has not come to light yet.”
Mayor Nasir said the persons who embraced martyrdom for restoration of democracy must be remembered with due honour.
The speakers also urged the government to try the perpetrators of Chittagong mass killing soon.
