Crime-free zone inaugurated on Indo-Bangla border

For the first time, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and India’s Border Security Force (BSF) have announced an 8.3-kilometer border area as ‘crime-free zone’.
The announcement was given at an inaugural ceremony of 64 BSF Battalion of Kalyani BOP, Bangaon border, North 24 Parganas of West Bengal, India.
The joint-operation of the Border Security Forces was inaugurated at the BGB and the BSF Director General level border conference on the Putphali border in Benapole and the Kalyani Border in India on Friday afternoon, said Mohsin Reza, Public Relation Officer of the BGB.
The main goal of crime-free zone is to prevent trafficking of women and children, drugs and arms smuggling, anti-social and criminal activities, he said.
The inhabitants of the frontier areas of the both countries thanked the innovative decision and they expressed great happiness as the forces to emphasis to create employment as per their secret list, reports our Jessore Correspondent.
Jessore-1 Constituency MP Sheikh Afil Uddin, BGB Director General Major General Abul Hossain, BSF Director General Shri KK Sharma and other high officials of the BGB, BSF and local government of both countries were present at the inaugural programme.
Lt Col Ariful Haque, Commanding Officer of 49 BGB Battalion said that the “crime-free zone” was inaugurated by BGB Director General Abul Hossain and BSF Chief KK Sharma, on the Putkhali and Doulatpur border of Bangladesh and the Gunarmath and Kalyani border of India.
BSF sector Commander Mridul Sen said, the decision was taken to make the crime-free zone in the bilateral meeting of BGB-BSF Director General level in October 2017. The BGB Chief Major General Abul Hossain placed the demand which was applauded by the BSF head Shri KK Sharma.

who are allegedly involved in crimes, he said.
Both the frontier forces have already installed border surveillance devices such as closed-circuit cameras, search lights and thermal imagers in the border areas to make the areas crime-free zone in true sense of the term, according tom him.
Bangladesh and India have 4156 kilometres common land border of which the Southwest region shares 644 kilometres, including 259-km river boundary. The remaining common border areas will be announced as “Crime-Free Zone” gradually.
