A group of adolescent cricketers led by UNICEF National Goodwill Ambassador and national cricket icon Shakib Al Hasan on Tuesday played a nail-biting match against an adult cricket team comprising politicians, journalists and former national cricket players.
The 10-over-aside cricket match was organized to mark the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). UNICEF Bangladesh in collaboration with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) arranged the friendly cricket match titled, ‘Children Fix Adults’.
According to a UNICEF press release, the observance of the CRC anniversary is an opportunity to seek new ways of solving problems to help overcome barriers that still prevent millions of children from realizing their right to survive, thrive and make the most of their potential through ‘innovation’.
“The courage of these children to take on such a highly professional adult team, clearly proves their potential to face challenges and lead the nation to make it a place fit for all – children and adults.
Instead of being intimidated by the powerhouse of adult skill and experience, my teammates stood up confidently against all odds”, said Shakib Al Hasan, who led the adolescent team as captain.
The opposition, Adult Team, comprised of cricket heavyweights and personalities, like former captains of the Bangladesh cricket team Akram Khan (Director of BCB); Faruque Ahmed (Chairman of the National Selection Committee of BCB); Habibul Bashar (Selector of the National Selection Committee of BCB); and Minhajul Abedin (Selector of National Selection Committee of BCB).
