National Income Tax Day observed: Creating more mass-awareness on boosting tax collection stressed

Speakers at a pre-rally discussion here yesterday unanimously stressed the need for creating more mass-awareness about boosting tax collection for the greater interest of making the country economically self-reliant.
The speakers said transparency and accountability should be ensured in the tax collection system so that more people are encouraged towards tax payment together with increasing the volume of tax collection. They were addressing the discussion marking the National Income Tax Day-2018.
Tax Zone of Rajshahi arranged the event followed by a large colourful rally. A good number of taxpayers, businessmen and others concerned from five districts of the region attended the rally.
Chaired by Income Tax Commissioner Dr Khandaker Ferdous Alam, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi division Aminul Islam, Commissioner of Customs, Excise and VAT Moazzem Hossain, Tax Appellate Commissioner Mohammad Masud, president of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Md Muniruzzaman and president of Income Tax Lawyers Association Advocate Mohsin Khan.
Aminul Islam viewed that the enhanced tax collection from the internal resources could be the effective means of reducing the dependence on foreign aid for executing the uplift programmes.
He attributed that the number of taxpayers are being increased gradually, which is a good sign for the nation.
Commissioner of Taxes Khandaker Ferdous Alam told the meeting the Rajshahi zone has realized income taxes worth Taka 670.15 crore in last 2017-18 fiscal year, up by Taka 82.70 crore than the previous fiscal.
BSS from Rangpur adds: Rangpur Metropolitan Police (RMP) Commissioner Md Abdul Alim Mahmud yesterday called upon citizens for spontaneously paying income tax with patriotic zeal to strengthen national economy.
“Following various pragmatic steps, including adoption of latest technologies, by NBR in recent years, an increasing number of citizens are paying income tax easily enhancing the nation’s capability of implementing massive infrastructural developments,” he said.
Alim made these observations while addressing a discussion arranged by Rangpur Zonal Tax Commissioner’s Office on its premises here in observance of the National Income Tax Day- 2018 as the chief guest.
With Commissioner of Taxes for Rangpur Zone Md Fazlur Rahman in the chair, Joint Commissioner of Taxes Ashraful Islam delivered welcome in the discussion narrating goals and objectives of observance of the day.
Deputy Commissioner of the Divisional Customs and Excise and VAT Commissionerate Saiful Haque, President of Rangpur Taxes Bar Association Aminul Islam, Senior Reporter of Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) Mamun Islam and taxpayer Shafikul Islam Muku addressed as special guests.
Moderated by Assistant Commissioner of Taxes Sumon Kumar Bormon, income tax officials and employees, rover scouts and girls’ guides, students, civil society members, business community leaders, taxpayers and local elite attended the occasion.
Lauding the increasing trend in income tax collection in recent years, the speakers urged every eligible citizen for paying income tax to make the nation completely self-reliant.
The chief guest said the number of eligible citizens for paying income taxes is increasing every year in the country with improving socioeconomic scenario enabling the nation to increase revenue collection and implement various mega projects at own costs.
“A taxpayer is always considered as an honourable citizen,” he said adding that the nation would not need any foreign assistance if all of the bigger, medium and small- scale taxpayers paid their taxes spontaneously.
He appreciated NBR for modernisation of the income tax fixation methods and launching modern technologies to make the tax payment process easier for eligible citizens.
Fazlur Rahman said income tax officials are working sincerely with a changed mindset to inspire citizens in paying income tax in a hassle-free manner by availing the facilities being provided by NBR.
