President Abdul Hamid on Tuesday underscored the need for increasing facilities in the country’s private universities for the students of poor families so that they can enroll there.
“We know education in private universities is very expensive…the scope for the students from poor families to study there is very limited. So, facilities, including scholarships, for them need to be increased,” he said.
The President said this while addressing the second convocation of Bangladesh University of Business and Technology (BUBT) held at Bangabandhu International Conference Center (BICC) in the city. A total of 1,458 students received degrees at the convocation while two students were given gold medals for their outstanding performance. Abdul Hamid said the government is expanding the scope of establishing public and private universities to fulfil the growing demand for higher education.
“As a result, new universities are being established in the country, creating opportunities for more and more students to avail themselves of higher education. Our duty will be to turn these universities into the real hub of education. Or else, the number of educated unemployed people will increase and we’ll lag behind in global competition,” he told the function.
Mentioning that the private universities will have to ensure their objectives for which those have been established, Abdul Hamid, also the chancellor of the university, said people expect the private universities to be the real place of acquiring knowledge. Pointing at the graduates, the President said, “I hope, you’ll be able to touch the pinnacle of success by dint of your merit and hard work.”
