The BNP on Friday said, the government has targetted the BNP leaders and workers in the name of combing operations against the militants and criminals.
“Their strategy is to suppress the opposition parties only, and not to pick up the extremists,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.
About the motive behind the police’s weeklong drive, Fakhrul said, “The incident of the combing operation on the very first day exposed the government’s real target.
The BNP leader remarked it while talking to the reporters in the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopedic Rehabilitation at Shaymoli in the city when he visited the ailing BNP nominated chairman candidate Azizur Rahman from Verendabari union of Gaibandha districts. The BNP chairman candidate was assaulted by his rivals.
Mirza Fakhrul said the criminals wanted to kill Azizur, but he survived murder attempt by the Mercy of Allah. ‘He is a freedom fighter and very popular in his area. And that is why people chose him through ballots.’
Pointing at the recent target killings, Fakhrul said, the government is creating anarchy in the country in a bid to hang onto power.
He also said there is no alternative than holding a national election under a non-party caretaker government to have a lawful government.
Meanwhile, BNP Standing Committee Member Barrister Moudud Ahmed on Friday said, the government exposed its narrowness in honouring and condoling the death of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali.
He said, former President Ziaur Rahman granted Muhammad Ali citizenship. That is why the Awami League government did not show rerspect to Muhammad Ali.
Barrister Moudud Ahmed said it while delivering a memorial speech on Muhammad Ali in the National Press Club organised by BNP.
BNP Vice-Chairman Major (rtd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed presided over the discussion meeting. Senior BNP leaders Lieutenant General (rtd) Mahbubur Rahman, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, Colonel (rtd) Abdul Latif, Boxer Gias Uddin and Footballer Aminul Islam, among others, were present and condoled the death of Ali.
