At least 89 lakh leaders and activists of the BNP were accused in more than one lakh cases filed in the last ten years, while the number of cases crossed three lakh in last 25 days since September 1.
The law enforcers intentionally lodged cases with police stations against even deceased, custodians, migrates, elderly men and minor have been enlisted, BNP sources said.
The members of law enforcing agencies, mainly detectives have been conducting crackdown targeting party program and election campaign across the country, they said.
They have reportedly taken decision of massive drives to be geared to create panic among party leaders and activists to keep them out of party program, polls campaign and election, they added.
They also alleged that the law enforces filed cases against the BNP men as per prescription of ruling party men and cops’ self heroism.
Meanwhile, three pro-BNP lawyers Advocate Khandker Mahbub Hossain, Advocate Nitai Roy Chowdhury and Advocate Sanaullah Mia
collectively filed the petition saying that 4,000 “fictitious and malafide” cases were filed across the country this month against three lakh leaders and activists.
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Dr Md Javed Patwari has said at an event recently “Police will take action against anyone plotting subversive activities or creating anarchy inside the country in the name of protests,”.
“Police are prepared to prevent any kind of sabotage No one will be allowed to make a peaceful environment unstable in the name of protest.”
About the BNP’s accusation of police harassment, the IGP said there is no relation between the arrests and the election.
He said, “The arrests are not made against the leaders or activists of any particular party. Only those against whom there cases or warrants are arrested. Political identities or government instruction are not considered.”
Earlier Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that members of law enforcement agencies did not arrest innocent people.
The minister urged the BNP to “prove that its arrested leaders and activists are not offenders”.
Cases have been filed against the paralyzed people, who were out of the country , went to Mecca performing Hajj, and even those who passed away.
In one such “ghost case” filed by Dhunat Police Station in Bogura on September 7, an 85-year-old paralyzed man named Abdul Khaleque Sarkar was charged with holding a secret meeting to carry out subversive activities.
Another BNP activist, Rubel Hossain, was also charged even though he left for Malaysia on February 14.
In another case, Abdul Azizullah, a BNP leader of Old Dhaka, was sued for throwing crude bombs at police during a hearing in Khaleda Zia’s case at Old Central Jail on September 5 – even though Azizullah died in 2016.
BNP activist Abdul Mannaf alias Chan Mia was also named in the case, even though he has been not returned to Dhaka from Saudi Arabia, where he has been staying since August 4.
Khairul Bashar, a former BNP leader, also went to perform Hajj on August 2, his name was included in a case filed on September 2 for holding a secret meeting allegedly to carry out violent activities.
Ramiz Uddin alais Babu, a BNP worker was made an accused in a case by Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP), but he was in the jail during filing of the case.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said in a press briefing on Wednesday that 3,25,000 fabricated cases were filed with police stations this month to suppress BNP ahead of national polls.
“The BNP leaders and activists, who are in rural areas, are also leading their days in fear of arrest,” he said.
BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi claimed yesterday that since September 1, a total of 3,00,000 leaders and activists of the party and its associate bodies have been implicated in 3,000 “false and fabricated” cases.
He alleged that over 3,500 people have been arrested already this month, including 90 in only 24 hours yesterday.

Civil rights organization Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (SHUJAN) Secretary Badiul Alam Majumder said the arrests will not help create a congenial atmosphere for holding a peaceful and fair election.
