Due to lifting of sands illegally from an adjacent canal with a dredger a big crack has been developed on Morrelganj-Bogi via Sharankhola regional highway at Lakuirtala point in Sharankhola Upazila in Bagerhat district on Monday morning.
The crack is gradually being wider and a portion of the highway is gradually going down. As a result, movement of vehicles on the highway is being greatly hampered. The local administration seized the dredger.
It is reported that one Kabir Jomaddar of village Lakurtala under Sharankjhola Upazila had been lifting out sands illegally from a canal, adjacent to Morrelganj-Bogi via Sharankhola regional Highway in order to raise his homesteads for long one week and due to lifting excessive quantities of sand from the underground a crack, more than 100 feet in length, suddenly appeared on the Highway. As a result, vehicles are to move on the road highway taking risks. It is apprehended by the locals that if the steps are not taken immediately to repair the damaged Highway the movement of vehicles on the road may be stopped totally at any moment. Being informed of the matter Mohammad Atul Mondol, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, Sharankhola visited the place of occurrence and seized the dredger with which sand was being lifted out from the canal. It is also learnt that the dredger belongs to one Faruk Sardar of village Gabbunia under Mongla Upazila in Bagerhat district. The UNO told, legal action will be taken against the owner of the dredger and concerned others.
Md. Anisuszzaman, Executive Engineer of Roads and Highways Department , Bagerhat said, some officials of the department went to the spot to assess the damage of the highway. He added, action will be taken against all the concerned persons.
