Since there is a growing demand in the global market, the crab farming has been expanding fast as an industry in the coastal district of the country.
Hence, its export is contributing a significant amount to annual foreign currency income, thus benefiting the farmers as well as those who live on collecting this natural breed from the sea coastline.
In fact, the crab hatchery for producing crabs is relatively a recent innovative farming process developed over the last few decades through research, farmer sources said. Now, more entrepreneurs in the district are involving themselves in crab farming with the use of scientific method by watching other farmers’ success.
Meanwhile, at least five crab farms based on innovative technology have started their operation in the coastal belt, and three of them have already gone into full swing production, sources informed.
With the initiative of few young entrepreneurs, another crab farm named ‘Golden Aqua Culture’ was inaugurated recently.
The project with an investment of Tk 5 crore on 5.5 acres of land is established at the estuary of Uttar Nuniarchhara Bashkhali of the district town. So far, one crore taka has been spent with an attempt to start the cultivation, primarily using a pond of one acre size, the sources also said.
Zakir Uddin Mintu, Manager of the farm, informed that more than 50 thousand brood crabs were released into the pond during the initiation of the project.
Earlier, the broods were collected at the rate of Tk 80 to Tk 100 each. There are 20 employees engaged in the farm to nurture those small crabs. Within a month, the broods will be matured and each kg of those will be sold at Tk 400.
