Cox’s Bazar municipal area has been put under lockdown marking it as the country’s first ‘red zone’ to prevent the coronavirus infection.
Deputy Commissioner of Cox’s Bazar, Kamal Hossain, made the announcement on Friday.
The district administration also issued a notification saying the municipal area will remain under lockdown from June 6 to June 20.

It said the entire Cox’s Bazar municipality has been included in the red zone as per the decision of the coronavirus prevention committee in the district in order to control the Covid-19 infection effectively and more efficiently.
Considering the necessity to take special measures in the red zone, it also incorporated some instructions for the people of the areas to follow during the lockdown from June 6 to June 20.
As pre the instructions, all types of private, family, social and political gatherings in the red zone area have been banned while all people there must stay in their respective residences.
It said all private and public transports will remain shut, but the light and heavy vehicles carrying daily essentials can operate from 8pm to 8am.
Besides, the private vehicles engaged in the efforts to tackle the coronavirus will have to take permission from the Deputy Commissioner.
However, the ambulances, patient-carrying vehicles, transports of healthcare personnel (on-duty), and the vehicles of emergency service providers will remain out of preview of the ban.
All types of shops, markets, bazaars, haats and businesses will remain closed. The kitchen markets and grocery shops can be kept open from 8 am to 4 pm on a limited scale only on Sundays and Thursdays, maintaining the health hygiene rules.
However, medicine shops are out of purview of the restriction.
Only the establishments engaged in providing emergency services to tackle Covid-19 will remain open on a limited scale. Financial institutions, including banks, will be open only on Sundays and Thursdays. All hospitals, medical care providers and banking services involved in facing the coronavirus will be excluded from the restriction.
