Cox’s Bazar Airport to be int’l one: PM

With an aim to boost tourism related activities, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday renewed her government’s plan to upgrade Cox’s Bazar Airport to an international standard and improve air link with the tourist town.
“The Cox’s Bazar Airport will be transformed into an international one so that travellers could go to the tourist town at a greater ease by availing themselves of better services,” she said.
The Prime Minister said this when leaders of Cox’s Bazar district Awami League met her during her visit to Ramu upazila.
Sheikh Hasina, also the president of Bangladesh Awami League, said her government has been implementing massive programmes for the development of Cox’s Bazar district.
She also referred to the largest 1200-MW coal-fired power plant being set up at Moheshkhali and a plan taken to set up an LNG terminal at the same place.
The Prime Minister said a project is also being implemented to establish direct rail link between Dhaka and Cox’s Bazar.
Sheikh Hasina also said the work on conducting a feasibility study is underway to construct a bridge to link Moheshkhali Island with other parts of the district.
She said the district will see massive changes with the implementation of these mega projects.
Talking about surplus production of salt in the district, Hasina stressed exploring new markets to export the surplus one.
She also emphasised massive production of solar energy in remote areas of the district having no electricity. “We’ll have to properly utilise solar energy given by Almighty Allah,” she said.
Newly-elected President of Cox’s Bazar district AL adv Sirajul Mostafa and other senior leaders spoke on the occasion.
AL Presidium members Engineer Mosharraf Hossain and Obaidul Quader, organising secretary Bir Bahadur Ushoi Singh, publicity secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud and local MPs were present.
