Bangladesh reported another 204 deaths from coronavirus in the last 24 hours until 8:00 am Saturday, taking the death toll to 17,669.
During the period, 8,489 fresh cases were reported, taking the total virus cases to 10,92,411.
Meanwhile, 8,820 more Covid-19 infected patients made recovery, bringing the total numbers to 9,23,163.
On Friday, the country saw 187 deaths and 12,148 cases from the deadly virus.
In the last 24 hours, 29,214 samples were tested across the country, yielding the positivity rate of 29.06 per cent. The latest figures took the recovery rate at 84.51 per cent and the mortality rate at 1.62 per cent.
With this, a total of 72,15,581 samples were tested in the country.
The DGHS said among the total 17,669 fatalities, 8,533 deaths occurred in Dhaka division, 3,216 in Chattogram, 1,370 in Rajshahi, 2,148 in Khulna, 525 in Barishal, 620 in Sylhet, 829 in Rangpur and 429 in Mymensingh division, reports BSS.
The beginning of the current year witnessed a drastic fall of coronavirus cases in the country but the trend lasted for only two months – 21,629 cases were detected in January and 11,077 in February.
After the drastic fall of Covid-19 confirmed cases, the country witnessed sharp increase of infection as 65,079 cases were reported in March, 2021 and 1,47,837 cases in April. The country again witnessed a fall in May, 2021 as it recorded 41,408 cases. From the beginning of June, 2021, the country recorded a sharp rise with 1,12,718 cases, the DGHS said.

China reported first death from the novel coronavirus in Wuhan, the capital of Central China’s Hubei province, on January 11 last year.
Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus case on March 8 last year and the first death on March 18 the same year.
According to Worldometer’s Covid-19 data, the deadly virus has killed 40,94,533 people globally and infected 19,04,37,695 while 17,36,01,950made recovery as of today afternoon.
