The number of Covid-19 cases and deaths in Bangladesh continue to increase at an alarming rate.
The country on Monday logged 78 more Covid-19 deaths in the past 24 hours, taking the death toll from the pandemic to 13,626.
Of the 78 deceased – 56 men and 22 women – 23 were from Dhaka division, 15 from Rajshahi, 14 from Khulna, 11 from Chittagong, nine from Rangpur, three from Barisal, two from Sylhet, and one from Mymensingh division.
Seventy-two of them died while undergoing treatment at the different hospitals of the country while six died at home.
Thirty-nine of the deceased patients were aged above 60, 23 between 51 and 60, eight between 41 and 50, seven aged between 31 and 40, and one was aged between 21 and 30.
So far, 9,768 men (71.69 per cent ) and 3,858 women (28.31 per cent ) have died from Covid-19 across the country.
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.59 per cent.
Earlier on Sunday, 82 deaths linked to Covid-19, and 3,641 fresh cases were reported.
Besides, the overcall caseload surged to 856,304 as 4,636 fresh cases– the highest in over two months– were confirmed in the 24 hours till 8am on Monday, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).
About 24,057 samples were tested across the country in the last 24 hours, yielding a positivity rate of 19.27 per cent– a significant jump from Sunday’s 16.38 per cent.
To date, 6,351,791 tests have been conducted in the country, leading to an overall infection rate of 13.48 per cent. The health authorities said 2,827 people recovered from the disease over the preceding 24 hours.
So far, 785,482 patients – 91.73 per cent – have made full recovery across the country.
Currently, 32,267 people are in isolation and 52,826 are quarantined. On March 8 last year, Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19, a severe acute respiratory illness caused by a new coronavirus strain which was later named Sars-CoV-2. The novel coronavirus broke out in China’s Wuhan city in late December, 2019 and quickly spread throughout the world, becoming a pandemic in less than three months.
The fast-spreading coronavirus has claimed more than 3,883,000 lives and infected as many as 179,326,000 people across the world till Monday evening, according to worldometer.
As many as 163,886,000 people have recovered from Covid-19, which has affected 220 countries and territories across the planet.
