Court orders state care for child born to rape victim

A court has asked the state to take care of a baby born to a rape victim in Chittagong.
Judge Md Rezaul Karim of the Chittagong Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal- 1 gave the order on Tuesday.
It also sentenced the rapist, Md Jasim, 35, to rigorous life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Tk 50,000.
Jasim is a resident of the Popadia village of the Boalkhali Upazilla in Chittagong.
Prosecution lawyer Jesmine Akhtar told bdnews24.com Jasim had raped his cousin after promising to marry her.
“But he reneged on his promise and ran away. The woman later delivered a male child.”
The court sentenced Jasim to life imprisonment after finding him guilty and directed the state to care to child until he came of age, Akhtar said.
The victim had been raped on Apr 27, 2008 and filed case on Apr 30 the same year.
 The court had framed charges against Jasim on Jan 31 in 2010 and delivered the verdict after the deposition of four witnesses.
Akhtar said Jasim has been in hiding ever since the incident.
