Rana Plaza tragedy: Court orders advertisement against 12 accused

A court of Dhaka on Thursday ordered for publication of advertisement against 12 absconding accused in the case filed in connection with the collapse of Rana Plaza building on April 24, 2013.
Senior Judicial Magistrate Shahjadi Tahmida directed the fugitives to appear in the court by March 15, otherwise the court would start the proceedings in their absence.
The fugitives include, among others, Mahbubur Rahman, a former Assistant Engineer of Savar Municipality, and the Municipality’s town planner Farzana Islam.
The collapse of Rana Plaza led to the death of at least 1,138 people, mostly garment workers. The building that housed five garment factories, was built on a swamp and some of its upper floors were constructed illegally.
On June 1, 2015, after two years of the incident, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of police submitted two charge sheets of the cases in the court against 42 people, including Rana Plaza owner Sohel Rana, Of the accused, 17 are in both the charge sheets of the CID.
