Staff Reporter :
The BNP on Tuesday harshly criticized the government’s decision to establish a special court in the old central jail, saying it is totally anti-Constitutional.
“The government has all on a sudden established a makeshift court in the prison where Begum Khaleda Zia has been staying as a prisoner. They want to hold trial of cases filed against the BNP chief in that court. It will be a camera trial. But there is no scope to conduct a camera trial in such a case. It is a clear violation of the Constitution. We demand cancellation of the decision immediately,” said BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in an emergency press briefing at the party Chairperson’s Gulshan office in the capital after sunset.
BNP Secretary General said, cases against her were under process in a makeshift court of Dhaka Alia Madrasa for long.
Now the government’s decision of establishing the court inside the old central jail bears ill motivation and violates human rights.
The BNP Secretary-General said, the government is doing these activities for the very clear purposes. Such activities will affect the upcoming elections.
It is being done to restore one-party rule again.
We take it very seriously. In the context of this, we will announce the next program. In response to query, he said, the biggest thing is that Khaleda Zia is an elderly politician; she is being stripped of her rights.
BNP Standing Committee Member Barrister Moudud Ahmed said, the constitution is being violated.
He said, Section 35 has not been amended. Today the government is changing it through a notification issued.
BNP Standing Committee Members Dr. Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Dr. Abdul Moen Khan, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy and Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, among others, were present.
