Courier service worker injured in New Market clash dies

A courier service worker, injured in the clashes between Dhaka College students and shopkeepers at New Market, has died in hospital.
The deceased Nahid Hasan, 18, was reportedly injured Tuesday (19 April) and breathed his last around 9:50pm at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
He worked for a courier service in the Bata Signal area of Elephant Road.
DMCH Police Outpost Officer-in-Charge Bacchu Mia said Nahid was admitted to the hospital in a critical condition earlier in the day.
Earlier, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal said that those responsible for clashes between Dhaka College students and businessmen in New Market will be brought under the law.
He said the clash between students and traders in Dhaka’s New Market area will be under control shortly. Those responsible for the incident will have to face the law.
The home minister told reporters at the secretariat on Tuesday afternoon.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam said the situation at the scene was very complicated. Police are treating students softly for technical reasons. The situation cannot be controlled by firing here.
He also said the New Market area clash and violence started over a minor incident.
It is to be mentioned that the traders clashed with the students of Dhaka College in New Market on Monday night. At night the police brought the situation under control within hours. But the students started clashing with the traders again around 10:30 am on Tuesday. The area was turned into a battlefield by brick-throwing and chase-chase by both sides.
