Country’s first open jail to be set up at Ukhiya

The government has taken an initiative to set up country’s first open jail at Ukhiya in Cox’s Bazar.
 The Ministry of Home Affairs is setting up the jail and rehabilitation center.
The process of acquisition and transfer of land have already been completed, according to sources.
Bazlur Rashid, superintendent of Cox’s bazaar prison, officials of Ukhiya land office and local representatives visited the project site at Uttar Baro bill area at Haladiyapalong union on Tuesday.
Bazlur Rashid said, the ministry has taken a step to build the prison and rehabilitation centers on 3 25.50 acres government khas land.
This will be the country’s biggest prison. The initial cost to the prison and rehabilitation centers would be around Tk 4 billion taka, he said.
UP Chairman Principal Shah Alam said, it is the positive initiative for the district by the government. It will change the mind of sinners and local people.
According to prison sources, the accused will not be confined in the place.
They would be allowed to move freely and will be able to do different kinds of works like cottage and handicraft works. Not only that, they earn money by cultivation of gricultural land. .
According to sources, the government has sent a letter to the Central Prison to take over the 325.50 acres land.
The project will be formally launched soon. Principal Shah Alam, Chairman of Haladiyapalong union, Abul Mansur Chowdhury were also present.
