UNB, Dhaka :
Claiming that the country is now under the grip of an illegitimate rule, BNP senior leader Abdullah Al Noman on Monday said power is in the hands of law enforcers and ministers, not in people’s government.
“An anarchic situation has been prevailing in the country…the ruling party plunderers and extortionists have got desperate as there’s no rule of law here,” he said.
Speaking at a discussion at the Jatiya Press Club arranged by Komol Academy, the BNP leader further said, “Rab, police and ministers, not people, are now the sources of all power… So, the country is not being governed legally as per the rules and constitution.”
Noman, a BNP vice chairman, said country’s democracy is now in exile as ministers and other members of constitutional bodies have bogged down in anti-constitutional activities breaching their oath.
“We think three’s no alternative to a free, fair and neutral election to get rid of this situation. People through the polls will elect their government to establish the rule of law, the BNP leader observed.
Refereeing to Awami League leaders’ remarks over the killing of ruling party men in crossfire, he said they had accepted extrajudicial killings long ago, but now they are talking against it as their party men fell pray to that. “It’s the fact of history that the plunderers become desperate when the rule of law is obliterated.”
Noman said most people are deadly against the Awami League regime but do not dare to raise their voice in fear of being subjected to murder and enforced disappearance and act of vengeance.
Recalling the role of then deputy chief of Gano Bahini and current Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu during 1972-75, the BNP leader said Inu and his associates had tried to capture sate power defeating Awami League through arms, not election. “Now they’re working as obedient salves of this regime, perhaps for power and money.” He also questioned the role of then undeclared chief of Rakhkhi Bahini and present Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed during the killing of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman on August 15,1975.
