BSS, Dhaka :
Advising all not to be panicked about swine flu or H1N1 virus, Country’s national disease monitoring arm, Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) yesterday claimed Bangladesh is ready to face any influenza breakout.
“Epidemic cannot be stopped, it can only be delayed and Bangladesh is one of the mentionable countries that can successfully delay any epidemic,” claimed the IEDCR Director Professor Mahmudur Rahman.
Dr Rahman said this at the orientation workshop for media at IEDRC conference room at city’s Mohakhali area.
“The country is keeping a close watch and has already taken a number of preparations to fight against the virus. District-level medical surveillance teams have been formed to check any outbreak; doctors, nurses and medical technologists at different levels have been trained, medical teams are working at the entry points of the entries, thermal scanners have been using at seven entry points,” he added.
Though our neighboring country India is affected by the virus but the affected states Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan are far away from Bangladesh and West Bengal, which Bangladesh shares most of its border, is also far away from those states.
“The country need to buy more medicine for the disease as the stocked medicine has been destroyed due to expire the validity date,”
he said adding, “At present the government has 1000 courses of medicine for H1N1 which can serve 100 of people.”
Swine flu became a “seasonal influenza” in Bangladesh like the other two viruses influenza B and H3, after the 2009 outbreak.
Children, aged persons, pregnant women, uncontrolled diabetic and cancer patients can take a single shot of a combined vaccine against these three viruses to avoid the high risk.
Fever, runny nose, sore throat, and cough followed and breathing difficulty are some of the symptoms of swine flu.
