Country logs 185 more Covid deaths, 8,772 new cases

Bangladesh logged 185 more Covid-19 deaths in 24 hours to 8am on Saturday, while 8,772 people tested positive for the virus over the same period.
With the latest development, the total number of fatalities from the novel coronavirus reached 16,189, while the total number of cases rose to 1,009,315 in the country, according to a press release issued by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Saturday afternoon.
Of the 185 deceased – 121 men and 68 women – 92 were aged over 60 years, 51 aged between 51 and 60, 22 aged between 41 and 50, 13 aged between 31 and 40, five in the 21-30 age group, and one each belonging to the 11-20 age group and 0-10 age group.
The pandemic has so far claimed the lives of 11,375 men (70.26%) and 4,814 women (29.73%).
The mortality rate against the total number of cases detected so far stands at 1.6%.
Dhaka division reported 70 deaths, the highest among the eight divisions, followed by Khulna with 51 deaths.
Chittagong division counted 20 deaths, Rajshahi 13, Rangpur 11, Barisal 10, Sylhet seven, and Mymensingh three.
As many as 27,884 samples were tested across the country in the 24 hours, amounting to a test positivity rate of 31.46%. The overall test positivity rate stands at 14.56%.Dhaka logged 4,492 cases, the highest among the divisions, followed by Chittagong with 1,692 , Khulna with 772, and Rajshahi with 620.
On the other hand, another 5,755 patients recovered from the infectious disease across the country, taking the total number of recoveries to 868,139.
Vaccination
The vaccination campaign was suspended on Friday. A total 4.295 million people have received the second dose of Oxford-Astrazeneca vaccine, while 5.82 million people have received the first dose.
In addition, 123,676 people had received the first dose of Sinopharm vaccine till Friday, while 2,237 people had received the second dose.
Meanwhile, a total of 9,773 people have been administered with the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine, so far.
The health authorities in Bangladesh reported the first three cases of Covid-19 on March 8, 2020.
