A bumper production of cotton is expected this season as harvesting of the cash crops has begun in six upazilas of the district.
A total of 4,056 hectares of land were brought under cotton cultivation in Chuadanga zone by Bangladesh Cotton Development Board to produce 5,985 tonnes of cotton.
Enamul Kabir, the chief cotton development officer of the zone, told BSS that three new high yielding verities of seeds-CB-12,13 and14-were introduced in the season to boost cotton production.
He is expecting a bumper production of cotton this year due to introduction of the new verities of cotton seeds and favourable weather.
Owing to cotton cultivation on 4,056 hectares, he further said, tobacco cultivation in the area has decreased to a great extent. Nearly 12,604 cotton farmers of the district are frustrated as cotton price has been fixed at Taka 47 per kg by the board this year while the same was Taka 63 last year.
